Usually with major game patch releases all servers will wipe. Like going from 1.06 to 1.07. Other wise it depends on the server owners. Some wipe on a regular basis others wipe only when needed. This said, I am talking about modded servers not official. Thank you kindly for this info.

Wipe is wipe, no preserving xml has nothing to do with storage. Unless your talking about bases made with dayz editor, or any other xml edits yea you can back those up. always keep backups if you a server owner, multiples.
